Serving Others
Golden Presbyterian partners with other churches in the metro-Denver
area to provide safe, affordable housing for families. Painting,
roofing, framing, plumbing, we get involved anyway possible.
Laraine Joy, our former pianist, started this ministry after visiting a
downtown Denver McDonald¡¯s restaurant. She noticed several homeless men
digging through their pockets in search of spare change to buy food and
immediately felt compelled by God to do something for them. Through diligence
and donations, she personally was able to begin a weekly hamburger ministry.
Now church members and many in the community at large help out to feed
several hundred needy people every Friday evening and also provide other
necessities such as clothes, socks, water, etc.
Participation is open to all churches in the Golden area and currently
seven churches participate under the banner of ¡°The Golden Family of Churches.¡±
This group sponsors an annual health fair, flu shots (subsidized for those
in need), Bonfils blood drives and a parish nurse training program.
Screened families participate in the program with host churches providing
shelter, food, showers, laundry facilities and a place to sleep. Golden Presbyterian
provides an evening meal during our rotation.
Golden Presbyterian partners with other churches and service organizations
to ¡°ring the bell¡± during the holiday season to raise funds that are
distributed all year long to those in need. In August, we join the Salvation
Army and Child Spree ¡ª a one day shopping extravaganza to provide new school
clothes for children in need.
The VOA prepares meals for seniors in our kitchen. Each Wednesday the noon
meal is offered in Fellowship Hall, seniors gather for lunch, games of
bingo and dominos and conversation. Monday through Friday, 20-25 hot meals
are delivered to home bound seniors.
First Presbyterian supports 103 children in Mudasomwa, Rwanda. Members and
friends donate $35 funds monthly to provide support both long and short-term
for these children. World Vision is the organization with which we work.
World Vision is a global partnership conducting child-focused emergency
relief, sustainable community development and advocacy in 99 countries worldwide.
Our church donates a portion of its budget annually for general mission work
around the world. We designate some of those funds to sponsor missionaries,
Anne and John Wheeler-Waddell, who are based in Ethiopia.
